“I Am Your Enemy” is Lion Music’s heaviest release to date, with musical similarities to In Flames, Testament, Pantera and The Haunted. The intense riffery, intricate arrangements and pummelling vocals showcase a band that will not let anything stand in their way. Lyrically the album focuses on the difficulties of everyday life, global politics or sometimes just having a huge out of line all night long party

Here is a band that you would say came out of left field for the Lion music roster. Not saying that's a bad thing either. Lion Music has been branching out in a variety of different ways with metal. If you looked at their roster about 6-7 years ago it would look quite different overall in terms of types of bands then it does today. Engine of Pain is probably one of the heaviest and most modern. They would be the band that would be the most likely to fit into the domestic scene with all of the hardcore acts. I consider them however a bit more of a thrash act with a modern edge. The band hails from The Netherlands and recorded their first demo back in 2004. The band also played Wacken in 2004 which I consider to be a pretty big deal as well. This brings us to the bands first full length album and the subject of this review. We obviously know who this will appeal to as mentioned. You may get a traditional fan or two such as myself that digs it, but it is heavy stuff with a bit more abrasive vocals. The music is very consistent in terms of intensity and style as well as sound. It's a pretty good bet that if you like the way it gets started off, you'll like the rest of the listen. As far as favorites, I pretty much like the album as a whole. This is due to that consistency I mentioned. I still like a good thrashing from time to time and that's what you'll get from this album. No love ballads here. It's all about going for the throat.

Overall

A pretty decent heavy album from this Lion Music artist. I really mean heavy too. Lots of riffage here. To me this is a modern sounding thrash album. Modern in the vocals, but thrash in the music. It is very consistent. If you like some you will probably like all. It's nice to see even another different sound coming from Lion Music as they reach out for different sounds. Very heavy and cool!

Lion Music is going out on a limb with Engine of Pain. Lion is a label known mostly for its large stable of melodic, progressive rock and metal. With Engine of Pain they have branched out into the thrash metal category. As far as I can tell Engine of Pain is the ONLY band on the label that is not melodic, progressive or instrumental, and is certainly the heaviest. While at first it was a shock to hear this new style coming from Lion I am now thinking it is a good thing to branch out and add variety.

I am Your Enemy is the second CD from the Dutch Engine of Pain, with the EP Here is the Pain being released in 2004. Both band and label make comparisons to bands such as The Haunted, Pantera, Testament and In Flames – high praise indeed and tough standards to follow. At first listen the style comparisons seem to be fair and the more I listened the more I felt that in time this band would find its own identity. They are pretty close right now, though.

The music of Engine of Pain certainly has a thrash-inspired sound and feel but the vocals float between the shouting of metalcore and the rough throat style of thrash. The first song is the title track, and for the first 80 seconds or so I thought I was listening to Nine Inch Nails, not a thrash band. They incorporate some electronica and samples that had me very worried upon first listen. But when the band kicks in with the real stuff my worries subsided. It became very clear that this is a thrash band. The second track, Fuel the Engine, gets bonus points for using a South Park sample (Cartman, specifically) at the beginning. Even though I don’t watch the show it caught my attention and was quite funny. The song itself is pretty damn good, too.

As the CD progresses it became clear that this is a band with the right idea. Although there is nothing revolutionary going on the execution of the style is admirable. There is no overdependence on double bass drumming – in fact the mix of the simple and not-so-simple is just about perfect. There is also a good mix of strong old-school riffs and wild solo’s. I had a real hard time trying to find fault with this CD. In all honesty there really are no deficiencies to point out. With each listen my head and feet were moving right along with the music and my air guitar was in full force. All very good signs, of course. But at the same time I could not find anything that truly stood out. However, I did enjoy this CD and it will get more playing time. This is a very solid release, no question about it, and I am eager to hear what they come up with next.

Engine of Pain plays straightforward thrashmetal, comparable to bands such as Testament and Pantera. One may ask what this band has to seek on Lion Music. It will most probably be their loudest band i reckon. The cd directly opens with the titletrack 'I Am Your Enemy’ in which samples are used too. Recently the band enlisted a new guitarist with Bastiaan Kuiper (Stormrider) because Ruud Banziger left. It however is Ruud that plays the guitar on I Am Your Enemy. The screams are deep and quite dark, sometimes sounding even like deathmetal grunting. Furthermore it is a musicwise tight and heavy pounding work of art that reminds of the heydays of Pantera, except for the technical sidepaths and samples that are used. It seems that Engine of Pain also features guest contributions from members of After Forever, Callenisch Circle and Severe Torture, but i haven’t found them. The music of Engine of Pain is good yet not suprising, but the thrashmetal fan will not expect this either so this is not a problem. Brutal and powerful with attention to detail and with a healthy dose of humour it is though, cause you probably wont hear Cartman as well as The Dude pop up in extreme metal elsewhere, now would you?. An accomplished release all in all.

ENGINE OF PAIN (NED)
I AM YOUR ENEMY Lion Music
Written by Tim Pijnenburg on Tuesday 30 January, 2007. Last updated on Wednesday 31 January, 2007 www.vampire-magazine.com

Dutch metal is on the rise more than ever! A segment from the Dutch scene is the branch hailing from the South (Limburg), which delivered quite impressive new albums recently (a.o. Legion of the Damned, Born from Pain, State:Chaos). Another quality thrash attack has been released by the dudes from Engine of Pain! Formed in 2003 they put their name on the thrash map thanks to the 2004 EP “Here is the Pain”, which delivered them a place on the Wacken Open Air bill, a Dean Guitars endorsement and a record deal with Lion Music. Now in 2007 they’ve come to shred with their full-length debut called “I am your Enemy”

The new album continues in the same relentless way we are used from “Here is the Pain”. So one should expect songs that are mainly focussed on fast, ripping yet melodic thrash riffs influenced by several golden oldies like Testament, Slayer, Pantera and more up to date The Haunted. Throw in some brutal Phil Anselmo- like shouting vocals and your receipt for a huge portion of killing thrash is ready to take away! The tempo in the songs is very high with some mid-tempo grooves on occasion  and variation has been created by the use of movie, sound-samples and guest appearances by singers from other Dutch metal acts. On title-track “I am your Enemy” for example it’s Pat (Callenish Circle), Wilbert (Desensitised) and Dennis (Severe Torture) who team up with singer Nick resulting in an aggressive song with many screams and grunts. Guest vocals are also done by Sander Gommans (After Forever) and Hans Reinders (Stonepit, ex-Form) on the song “ At the end of the Day”. The title-track and “T4- The Mass Corruption” contain cool computerised-samples as intro, created by Joost van den Broek (After Forever). So although the emphasis mainly lies on pure thrash aggression, Engine of Pain accomplished to bring in other elements that give the album just that bit extra. Something I like as well is the fact that titles of songs are returning in the lyrics. Singer Nick’s vocals-style is not my personal favourite, but the returning titles in his lyrics make the songs better recognizable and memorable! Something that will have its positive effect during live situations! Perfect examples for that are the songs “Cycle to Cycle”, “Heads Up!”, “Close to the Border”, “Man of the Year” and “XTRM FKVR”. That last song has also a very cool, fluent solo at the end, by the way, which was played by former guitarist Marcel Banziger who’s been replaced by Bastiaan Kuiper ( Stormrider, Symbolic, ex-Chaos Control, ex-Gemini) after the recording of this album. Production-wise I’m not very fond of the drum-sound which is a bit too flat in my opinion, but the bass sounds fat and the guitars are extremely tight in the mix with the vocals nicely thick on top.

Engine of Pain can be proud on this awesome thrash debut! With a good record deal and excellent musicians the future looks hopeful and I believe they will develop this further from here. The official “I am your Enemy” release party will be at the Azijnfabriek in Roermond on March 10th  (with Callenish Circle and State: Chaos). Since I’m leaving on a worldtrip the day after tomorrow, I will not be present at that show, but to everyone who will: “Heads up!”, “Fuel the Engine”, bang your head like maniacs and enjoy!

Engine of Pain – I Am Your Enemy

2007 Lion Music

In these days of extreme/death metal taking the more technical approach towards more sophisticated guitar riffs and syncopated rhythms, it’s like everybody is jumping on that bandwagon. However, Engine of Pain is a band that stands out; having a sound that crosses Death Angel and Arise-era Sepultura with a little bit of Hatesphere & Eyes of Fire, this Dutch quintet howls with aggression. True, the vocals are within the death metal growling range, and might turn off some, but for those who enjoy the extremities, here you go.

Going from Slayer tempos to dark, avenging crunch, I Am Your Enemy portrays antagonism, belligerence, and hostility through both the lyrics and the amplifiers. The aural assault is consistent through the disc, “Sunrise Express,” “Cycle to Cycle,” and “At the End of the Day” keeps it all things heavy, but at the same time, the melodies make their way throughout the brutality that engulf the record, where the choruses occasionally have the “screaming on key factor,” this is particularly found on “Man of the Year.”

The guitar work of Patrick Waltmans and Bastiaan Kuiper is what makes this record tight; there are lots of solos to go around complimented by the hard edged rhythmic punch; so there is none of that noisy ‘metalcore’ here, for which I An Your Enemy proves to be a solid melodic thrash/death metal record.
