Critically acclaimed as one of the most creative, imaginative and talented guitarists on the planet and always at the forefront of technology Jennifer Batten returns for her third solo album in the captivating sonic tapestry of “Whatever”. Released as a dual pack of CD & DVD the album is described in style by Jennifer herself as “guitronica”. The album possesses plenty of guitar, but “Whatever” is heavily multi textured with a plethora of sounds and vocal samples, and has a humorous thread throughout. The music is also influenced by various ethnic cultures such as the African vibe in "Off the Deep End".

Batten, Jennifer – Whatever

2008 Lion Music

She is the queen of shred, known for playing “Flight of the Bumblebee” & “Giant Steps” effortlessly, her teaching at Musicians Institute, and touring with Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson, but when it comes to her own axe burning, Jennifer Batten does her own thing, something that is indescribable, incomparable, and truly original.

And her latest effort Whatever is no exception, it combines her trademark shed sound while incorporating world music, ambient textures, and just about anything you can add to the mix. You have moments of jazzed laden hip-hop (“Ass Whoopin'”), eased plectonic grooves (“Off the Deep End”), industrial trip-hop (“Run With It”), ambient sub-techno (“In the Afterlife”), and acoustic toying (with the stripped back “Fearless”) for a record that moves around with diversity and musical mastery. There is one track through that uses bodily functions as rhythm called “Inner Journey;” this has to be a first, and is by far the most creative thing I have ever heard on a record, and hilarious as well.

Whatever is a record that offers something different, fresh, and new the instrumental guitar world; for Batten has approached this recording with sincere imagination, where the musical possibilities are endless, yet she has kept an eye (and ear) on the melodic forces that come out of the six strings, where the tunes in focus, making this the most unique guitar based album you may ever hear.
