2nd Round
CD
Lion Music
Airless are a dazzling hard rock band hailing from Spain complete with classy AOR melodic sensibilities. As the title suggests “2nd Round” is the bands second full length album and debut on Lion Music following their acclaimed self titled debut.  “2nd Round” is 11 tracks of melodic hard rock at its finest, yet a little harder than most bands within the genre. The classy vocals from Iñaki Lazkano and punchy guitar work of Robert Rodrigo form the basis of the bands trademark sound, which is fused by the rock solid backbone of Miguel Manjón on bass and Paco Martinez on drums.

AIRLESS, founded in 2000, is a classy Hard Rock outfit from Spain imbued with the individualistic guitar skills of Robert Rodrigo. The band debuted for domestic label Vinny Records with a self-titled album in 2002 whilst their follow up, "2nd Round" saw release in 2005 by Lion Music. Now the band is back with “Fight”, an album with a slightly harder edge than before, and a rawer production which better represents their potent live show. SOLD OUT AT THE MOMENT!

Airless: Fight

Airless: Fight

Melodic Hard Rock
Rating: 4.25/5.0

Timing, as always, can be tricky thing. Here I review another rock band from Spain (see my review of Eldorado elsewhere). Airless is a more traditional melodic hard rock band with a guitar rock foundation in well-known Spanish guitarist Robert Rodrigo. 'Fight' is their third album, the second with Lion Music, and will prove a delight to melodic rock fans everywhere.

Throughout 'Fight' you will find solid arrangements with catchy melodies and choruses, compelling and passionate vocals, and some ripping guitar work. For the first listen for 'Now Or Never' or 'Time To Say Goodbye' because it's easy to sing along. As for the vocals, Inaki Lazkano moves between a fast rocker like 'Twist Of The Wrist' or 'Switch Off The Light and the ballad-like 'Time To Say Goodbye' with amazing ease and confidence. Much like Tryg Bundgaard of Sixty 8, Lazkano could steal the show. Finally, guitar maestro Rodrigo displays natural energy and creativity in his solos, yet still flattering his heroes and peers like Eddie Valen or Neal Schon. Though relatively steady throughout (see next paragraph), Rodrigo's more than brilliant on 'Blame The Darkness' and excels on 'Now or Never' and 'Twist Of The Wrist.'

With all this praise, there are some thin moments on 'Fight.' Specifically, on 'I Don't Need Your Words' and 'One Last Kiss,' the melodic hard rock becomes a bit too traditional. The former is redeemed by the solid bass line and overall rhythm section and the latter by Lazkano's superior vocals; otherwise, Rodrigo drops the ball here as his fret work is muted and uninspiring.

Though some will be quick to say Airless' 'Fight' is more of the same European melodic rock, I ask where else will you find it being done better? Whether it is the shamelessly 80's style of 'Switch Off The Light' or the quirky vocals and imaginative arrangement of 'Blame The Darkness, Part II, 'Fight' is filled with lively and entertaining rock, a pleasing contribution to the genre. Very recommended!  - Craig Hartranft www.dangerdog.com

Band: Airless
Title: Fight
Label: Lion Music

With the festive period now just a memory away it's time to catch up with the releases of late last year, so apologies to all the bands and labels.  It's now shoulder to the wheel and pressing on into 2009 with a vengeance.

'Fight' is the third album from acclaimed Spanish Melodic Rockers Airless and this time the band have found a little more grit than that of their previous two albums.

There is a much harder guitar sound on this album and it's felt straight away with the album opener ‘Don’t Give Up’.  Don’t get me wrong the band are still straight up Melodic/Hard rockers, but this time around guitarist Robert Rodrigo has been let off the lease a little more, not just on the opener but the entire album.  The vocals of Inaki Lazkano’s are again just superb and there is also a little more feeling in the songs this time around, which seems to really benefit the whole album from these two changes alone.

The hard rocking continues with ‘Now Or Never’ and again the crunching more energetic guitars drive this one along.  ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ brings the tempo down with this more power ballad styling starting off with a gentle piano intro and shows that feeling I was talking about with Lazkano’s vocals taking centre stage on this one.  This song takes me back to the 80’s rock scene when power ballads ruled the airwaves.

The tempo is soon picked right back up again with ‘Twist Of The Wrist’, a great hard rock track with some quite superb pummeling drums courtesy of Pako Martinez and a thumping bass line provided by Miguel Manjon.  This is just a great up-tempo rock that reminds me very much of the hard rocking tracks provided by the likes of Bonfire and Krokus, again with the rich guitars of Rodrigo powering on through the track.

The crunching guitars and power rock continues with ‘Crying For Your Love’ and one my many favourites off the album ‘Switch Off The Light’.  Both superb guitar fuelled rock songs that will have the die hard Hard Rock fans boogieing in the aisles.

Again the tempo is switched with the atmospheric melodies of ‘Suffering’.  This darker edged track mixes Lazkano’s superb vocals with some quite stunning bridge work solo’s by Rodrigo.

After something a little deep it's time to rock it back up again with ‘Blame (the darkness part II)', another great all out rocker before being brought back back down with that power ballad feel on ‘I Don’t Need Words’.

The last two tracks leave the listener wanting more.  Firstly the modern rocker ‘One Last Kiss',  then the title track ‘Fight’, another guitar rich track that rounds off a great album and one that will surely put the band on the map.

AIRLESS - 2nd Coming
Lion Music

by: JEREMY JULIANO  www.metalexpressradio.com

Lion Music Quick to follow up on the success of a self-titled release, Airless is back with the aptly named 2nd Coming. Now with the support of a major label, Airless is bringing Hard Rock to the masses.

The sound is a mix of many of the great Melodic Hard Rock acts that reigned the airwaves in the mid-eighties. Imagine, if you will, Kip Winger writing songs for Kingdom Come … sensible AOR driven tunes, delivered in quick punches of tight and polished musicianship. Most of the album is played in quick pace with the gratuitous ballad thrown in to show their thoughtful, loving side. Unlike many bands from non-English speaking segments of the world, vocalist Iñaki Lazcano delivers well-phrased lyrics that do not sound like a mish-mash of broken English.

Guitarist Robert Rodrigo is reminiscent of early or Loudness’s Akira Takasaki; he plays a lot of notes and arpeggio chord voicings during the songs. The sound really lifts the songs and breaks away from the mold of what many of today’s bands are doing. It is refreshing to hear such dynamic playing in the context of some great melodies and strong song structure.

Miguel Manjon handles his bass duties, both with solid 16th note thumping lines and by duplicating some of Rodrigo’s licks; a very tasty bassist who is sure to be a major name in the near future. The quartet is rounded out by the solid-hitting Paco Martinez on drums.

Opening with the title track “2nd Coming,” you almost expect the song to rocket into a breakneck pace as so many opening tracks do. However, the song takes a groove-oriented approach that features some solid bass playing from Miguel and a cool, breathy vocal delivery from Iñaki. From there on out, the music sticks to a steady AOR format, but keeps things fresh with some exciting finger work on both Robert and Miguel’s parts (notice the cool bass/guitar riff in “It’s Up To You”). Other highlights are “Cross the Line” and “The Storm,” two tracks that are sure to bring the crowds to their feet once these songs are showcased live.

Airless' 2nd Coming is apt to leave you hungry for more. Great songs and strong musical skill make for an impressive album. Once these guys hit the road, their buzz will only get stronger. Don’t be late to the party, go out and buy this disc now; it won’t be long before it is considered a classic.

AIRLESS - 2nd ROUND

Lion Music
Out Now

Second album and debut on Lion Music from Spanish melodic hard rockers Airless.

2nd Round is a supremely confident slice of melodic hard rock with great guitar work from Robert Rodrigo.  The band stamp the same sort of territory as early Harem Scarem but are better equipped in the guitar department and deliver hooks as good as anything the Canadian rockers have delivered past or present.

The infectious rock solid melodies of Prayers Are Not Enough, Handful Of Lies and The Storm sum up the quality displayed throughout and its one album that's easy to get into, easy to enjoy and perfect for a number of applications - cranking this one in the car is a treat.  The production is big with a dominant guitar sound which is just what the music demands.

With 2nd Round Airless have pumped new life into the melodic hard rock genre and is the perfect album for those that have a liking for bands ala Dokken and Burning Rain.  Excellent stuff.

AOR & melodic (hard) rock

Looking at Lion Music’s roster, this Spanish band can be considered as the odd one out. No guitar orientated rock nor power/progressive metal this time, but surprisingly well-executed AOR/MHR. As the title suggests, “2nd Round” is the band’s second full-length album, following the self-titled debut album, which was released by Vinny Records (whatever happened to that label?) in 2002. The songs for “2nd Round” were already recorded in the summer of last year - again under the guidance of ace producer Carlos Creator – but the fans had to wait a year for its actual release. To soften the blow: it has been worth the wait! Ace of the pack is Iñaki Lazkano, who’s the proud owner of a powerful voice, reminding me more than once of Harry Hess (Harem Scarem). The songs of this band are all great and what’s more, the band members are not afraid to really rock. Watch out for Robert Rodrigo’s guitar work! Can’t point out any highlights though as the whole album is maintaining a high level throughout. Yes, I’m impressed! Airless is the best band from Spain and “2nd Round” is surely one of the best Lion Music releases ever! Highly, and I mean HIGHLY recommended! (CL)

These guys are pretty cool, sort of a mix of Casanova and FireHouse. I
say that mainly because vocalist Inaki Lazkano kinda reminds me of
Casanova's Michael Voss crossed with FireHouse's C.J. Snare (and maybe
a dash of Skid Row's Sebastian Bach from time to time), but there are
also musical similarities. Many of the songs are about love and
relationships -- titles like "Don't You Go," "Never Fall In Love," and
"It's Up To You" are big clues there -- and there's an overall vibe of
vintage, late '80s/early '90s melodic hard rock. To work, that style
really needs a hotshot guitarist and Robert Rodrigo certainly fits the
bill. Highlights include "It's Up To You" (strong vocals, killer riffs
and fills), "Prayers Are Not Enough" (fun solo!), and "Cross The Line"
(nice chunky guitars). Good stuff from this Spanish band, definitely.
As an aside, the disc has a glitch where track #10, "Never Fall
In Love," ends before the song finishes, and then track #11 starts
with the last 20 seconds of "Never Fall In Love" before "The Darkness"
kicks in. Odd. - Tim Wadzinski (tsw512@yahoo.com)
