Marcel Coenen, born on September 21, 1972, started playing the guitar when he was 11 years old. Soon he learned the most important ingredients of musical theory and guitar techniques. Two years later at the age of 13, he started playing in the first of several bands.

One of the better-known bands in Holland in which Marcel started to play when he was 16 years old, was the band Speedica. He gained the most stage experience and released several demo tapes and sampler CD’s with this band. The bands’ name was later changed into “Form” and with this name they released an album called “I Choose My Own” in 1994 on Mausoleum Records.

Around 1993 Marcel started the band “Aura”. In 1996 the band changed their name to “Lemur Voice”. In the same year the first Lemur Voice disc called “Insights” was released by Magna Carta Records. Marcel also played a song on the Rush tribute album “Working Man” among artists like John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy. Lemur Voice released a second CD called “Divided” in 1999 through Telstar Records and a year later the group decided to disband.

In 1998 Marcel competed in the Dutch National Guitar Championships. He reached fourth place in the finals and for the style of Rock Marcel was the best.

When Lemur Voice broke up Marcel started the band Sun Caged. Sun Caged has played in support of bands such as Queensryche and Vanden Plas, so Marcel is getting a lot of recognition lately. Sun Caged released their debut album in October 2003 on Lion Music.

Lion Music will also re release the 1999 album “Guitartalk” in August 2003. The album originally was a CD-R with home recordings. Marcel remastered all the songs and recorded three extra songs for the re-release. Marcel finished work on his second solo album - Colour Journey - which this time sees vocalists used to further extend the Coenen vision and was released on January 20th 2006. This was followed up by a live DVD entitled "A Live Time Journey" in September 2006 which saw material from all Marcel's solo albums plus some extra surprises.

March 2007 saw the release of the second Sun Caged album 'Artemisia' which has gained superb press around the world.

Marcel’s inspirations come from very different sources. He lately gets inspired a lot by guitarists like Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse and Joe Satriani. Also Steve Vai and rhythm master James Hetfield are big influences for Marcel’s playing. He also listens a lot of New age, movie soundtracks, symphonic and progressive rock and the more brutal metal styles.
